John Wood is the Vice President of Operations at Medalist Sports. His responsibilities include supporting the planning, logistics and execution of all projects produced by the company including mass participation fundraising events such as the LIVESTRONG Challenge Series presented by Nike and the Dempsey Challenge presented by Amgen, as well as professional cycling events such as the USA Cycling Professional Championships and the Amgen Tour of California.
His focus is on the areas of project management, registration, staffing, housing, transportation, risk management, and general oversight and management of event operations. In addition, John assists the management team in the development of new platforms and opportunities for Medalist and its clients.
Prior to joining Medalist Sports, John spent several years with Trek Bicycles, working for their in-house luxury cycling tour provider, Trek Travel. During his time there, his primary duties involved researching, creating and managing cycling tours, hospitality programs and special events for the organization.
His broad range of projects included designing luxury cycling vacations for the Tour de France, Vuelta a Espana, Giro d'Italia, Tour Down Under, and Tour of California; creating event hospitality packages for the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team, and other corporate partners; designing and executing the 2010 Trek Madone product launch in Monaco; and organizing the annual Chairman's Ride for the Amgen Tour of California.
Before working at Trek Travel, John served as the Assistant Director of the Bicycle Ride Across Georgia, a nationally recognized and respected statewide bicycle tour, organizing four major cycling events annually which attracted participants from across the nation and around the world. In this capacity, John developed ride routes, managed logistics, and worked with chambers of commerce, tourism offices, and officials to coordinate local efforts of the event host cities.
John's extensive experience in sports marketing and event management also includes involvement with the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the BMW Ultimate Driving Experience.
John is a graduate of the University of Georgia, where he competed on the school's cycling team. There he won both the team and individual SEC Conference Championship titles and went on to represent UGA in the National Collegiate Cycling Championships.
John is proficient in four languages and has completed advanced studies in both Spain and France.
